I think that a lot of us today would say that we read our bibles and do whatever we can to be "Good Christians." I think that on the outside, we seem to function in ways that resemble the teachings of Jesus Christ. Maybe we even take the next steps and volunteer in ways that account for a real sacrifice of our time, talents and resources. But I wonder how many of us still struggle with hearing God's voice speaking directly to our hearts on a regular basis.

I wonder how many of us would be honest and admit that there are many other things in our lives that have compartmentalized our relationship with God. Maybe we're still doing all of the "right" things, but deep down we know that those things are just mechanical traditions that we may have adopted from family members or friends. We may have never experienced the revelation from God that compels us to surrender fully to Him.

In this message, Pastor Nate speaks from II Kings 22 about the state of Israel before Josiah became king, and the measures he took upon discovering a revelation of God's truth to His people. We are all capable of receiving revelation from God. The question is, do you want it? What are you willing to do to get it?

This week we begin a look at why we do Life Journaling around New Life in a series called Raise The Bar: Are You Hearing From God? So what is Life Journaling? What's its purpose? How do we do it? What are some things that it's not?

The most important thing to bear in mind is that we believe God is always speaking to us in ways that directly affect our hearts and lives. One of the ways that we can keep our hearts sensitive to hear God's voice is to prioritize consistent Bible reading and write down the things that God says to us. With time and by putting His words into practice, we renew our minds and are then able to speak God's words to others, prophetically. That is, we can speak the things to others that God would say to them as if He were standing there in our place.

This week we end our series The Arrival with a look at Luke 4 where Jesus unrolled the scroll in the synagogue and read the words, "...to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor." Pastor Nate notices how this passage relates to an ancient Hebrew tradition known as the Year of Jubilee where all our debts are meant to be forgiven and our enslavement to become freedom.

Throughout human history, we see examples of our attempts to appease an intrinsic fear in our hearts that compelled us to sacrifice whatever we could to make God happy. But it was never enough. There was nothing we could do to bring us any closer to a knowledge of or relationship with God. So God made a way to reconnect with us.

The gift of Christmas was that God made a way for us to receive His favor and know deep down that He isn't angry with us. He loves us so much that He came into our world. He took our sin and pain upon Himself so that we could know Him once again. He gave us His Spirit so that we might be empowered to live in a holistically new way. He gave us His favor and forgave all our indebtedness to broken ways of living. The trumpet has sounded, the Year of Jubilee is here.

The Good News has arrived.

Welcome back! Hope the holidays were well with everyone!

This week we focus on our third topic from Isaiah 61 -- Jesus came to bind up the brokenhearted. But what does that mean? It seems to presume that all of us experience some level of brokenness that we cannot free ourselves from. We have developed many means by which we can address the dysfunction in our lives, but no method to date can take us back to that original pain and mend our broken hearts. So what do we do? How can we experience restoration and healing?

Isaiah 61:3 gives us a glimpse at the loving mercy and restoration that Jesus wants to give us. He cares so deeply about our pain that He took our brokenness upon Himself at the cross so that we could know a lasting freedom that surpasses our prior circumstances. God is waiting for us to surrender those hurts to Him so that He can restore our broken hearts to a place of complete healing. And though the process takes time, He promises to never leave nor forsake us -- He is always here, carefully crafting us into the image He originally intended.

Hey Everyone! Christmas is just around the corner!

Our second topic comes from the next part of the verse in Isaiah that Jesus reads in the synagogue in His hometown of Nazareth at the outset of His ministry on earth -- that He came to proclaim freedom for prisoners and release the oppressed.

All throughout His ministry on earth, Jesus did just that; He healed the sick, fed the hungry, proclaimed the Good News and released the oppression within the human condition. But what does that look like for us today? Many of us are familiar with incarceration as it is practiced in our society, but how many of us are dealing another kind of captivity in our daily lives and haven't found a way out?

Jesus came to release a people struggling with issues of "self" thousands of years ago, and He is waiting for us to ask Him to do it again in our lives today. He wants to free us.

Hi There!

This week marks the beginning of our Christmas season here at New Life -- a time when we look back to The Arrival of Jesus into our world and look ahead to the opportunities His arrival has afforded us today.

Pastor Nate begins our look at The Arrival by addressing some of the things that Jesus came into our lives to do; namely, to preach good news to the poor. But what does that really mean? What if we don't consider ourselves to be poor by economic standards? What if we are indeed living in destitution? What would Jesus say to us today?

Jesus' words are so very pointed as they pierce deeply into our human experience. The fact is that we are all spiritually destitute. But part of the Good News is that we can receive a greater spiritual wealth than can be described in modern terms. And when we are rich towards God, we have a peace that surpasses all else.

So what's the first step toward addressing our spiritual poverty? Watch and see!

This week marks our last talk in our Core Value series, Gives. Pastor Nate compares our church to the church of Antioch from the book of Acts and reminds us to continue towards our goal of being generous people. God has given us so much already and wants us to invest in the things that will last -- our relationships with God and other people. The problem is that generosity doesn't come naturally to us. So what do we do? How do we become generous people if we aren't already?

The answer is Stewardship rather than Ownership. So how do we pursue a life of Stewardship? We're glad you asked! Watch and see how we can become generous people by investing in God's economy.

But God's plan for his life has not changed; in Moses' moment of failure, God still offers him the chance to turn that failure into an opportunity for future success. It's about failing forward and allowing God to walk us through the pain of regret on to His plan of mercy and grace that awaits us on the other side the desert.

Over the course of this series, we have learned about God's miraculous intervention in the lives of His disciples. But in looking at the past, it's easy to perceive miraculous occurrences as pertaining only to the past. Or even as evidence to the fact that our life's circumstances remain woefully bereft of God's presence. Perhaps we find ourselves in a place where we don't believe God can change our situations. Or that we don't deserve it even if He could.

Still, how would we recognize miracles if we saw them today? And to which do we glorify; the miracle, the one who performed it, or the God behind it?

We as a church have been founded upon a fundamental truth that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever. And the same God that used people like you and I to perform miraculous signs and wonders in the past desires to do so again today. But not as mere entertainment nor for its own sake. And not so that we would receive the adulation of astonished passer's-by. Rather, so that God would Himself be glorified, and in so doing, permit us the honor of becoming beacons of His unfathomable love to those whom may have never heard a word spoken of the good news of Jesus Christ and the freedom that awaits those who believe in Him.

But. . .that is the whole point. Belief. How do we move past our perceptions, failures and lack of faith to become earth-shattering miracle-workers poised to allow God's love to manifest itself in impossible ways? How do we see miracles envelop our daily lives and pour over into the lives of others?

You may be surprised by the answer.

The storms of life. They are never few. It seems like no matter how well we do in one particular storm, there is always another of increasing intensity just waiting for us with a disarming grin, ready to thrash us about like an inflatable raft caught in a hurricane. And somehow we always manage to react the same way.

Fear.

This week we'll have a look at Mark 4 and 6 and discover a unique characteristic that, to a degree, is shared by both people and God. And that is predictability. When storms arise in our lives, our first reaction is always fear. But God has a reaction that is just as easily perceived and experienced time and time again.

Peace.

God wants to remind us of one of the greatest miracles that we rarely view as miraculous because nothing in our human experiences can ever compare to the peace of God that leads to deliverance from all storms. And when we are in that place of fear that causes us to loose sight Him, we must remember that He has never lost sight of us. And no other being has the power to call out to the storms that threaten us and cause them to utterly dissipate like cold vapor caught in a hot wind.

This Week Pastor Nate addresses a kind of miracle that we may be most familiar with -- a miracle of Provision. It can come in a number of ways, be it financial or relational. It could be something as tangible as a new car or as rewarding as comfort for a weary heart. But I think one thing is clear: We can all use God's miraculous provision in our lives today.

So, we'll read from 1 Kings about the account of a widow and her son who was on the brink of starvation and how she was saved by a miracle from God. But the kind of provision she received and the means by which she received it may not have been what we might expect today. It literally cost her everything she had -- the ingredients for the very last meal her and her son would eat before succumbing to starvation. But that single act of faith and obedience yielded a return that saw her and her son through seasons of drought in that region during those dreadful times.

So what does that mean for us today? How do we become a part of God's story and see miracles of provision in our own lives and the lives of those around us? What keeps God's miraculous provision from being realized in our lives, and why does it seem like we don't see it more often?

This week Pastor Tim Poetzl brings us a message from the first miracle that Jesus is recorded to have performed. Even from the beginning, Jesus seemed to include people in his miracles. He looked to those who were hurting, desperate and in need of a divine intervention to be the ones to participate in their own healing.

In this case, Jesus looks out and sees a number of servants who would probably have been punished severely for running out of wine at a wedding. After being prompted by his mother, he decides to take action and perform the famous miracle of turning water into wine. And being God, he could have simply done it with a word or a thought. But he chooses instead to include the servants in the process Ã?? a model that we see time and time again. This brings about an interesting question: Why would the God of the universe choose to use us in our state of brokenness to bring about a miracle when we as human beings have proven time and time again to be absolutely powerless?

ItÃ??s simple. God wants to, Ã??. . .take the bologna sandwich of our lives and turn it into a Sal Garberg Special.Ã?? And He wants to empower us in the process by taking the little bit we have and meeting it with His infinite strength. All it takes is a little faith, trust and obedience and we may see something truly breathtaking take place.

Easter 2007 has come and gone and marks the close of our, "Remember. . ." series. Pastor Nate leaves us with a final thought from the life of Thomas, one of the original twelve disciples. Thomas was a man who had missed out on a significant occurance in the lives of the other ten disciples and as a result, he simply could not believe that the man he saw brutally executed could have risen from the grave.

Thomas found himself "staring at a wall" and much like Thomas, we sometimes find ourselves in similar situations. We know that there's more to the Easter story than painted eggs and chocolate bunnies. We know that perhaps we missed out on an experience that everyone else can attest to, but for the life of us, we cannot understand. We may even feel like God left us out for a reason, which has caused bitterness to take hold of our hearts.

But this Easter season, God wants us to remember that those whom He has set free is free indeed! He wants us to move from our corners of uncertainty and disbelief to a place of trust and faith. And the good news is this: He won't leave us to do it alone. Jesus came to bridge the gap that we could never cross by our own merit. And He is waiting to guide us into that place of trust and faith and revelation in a way that we can grasp and is uniquely personal to us.

So if you're listening right now and can't believe that this Jesus guy is real, go ahead and ask Him.

You may be surprised by what you find out.
